GPs are considering extending the consultation period on the proposed closure of a hospital unit following criticism.

Redbridge Clinical Commissioning Group (RCCG) is looking to close the Heronwood and Galleon Unit at Wanstead Hospital in Makepeace Road, Wanstead, and transfer its 48 care beds to King George Hospital in Goodmayes.

Wanstead Hospital's general hospital was closed in 1991, but now the two remaining units are being earmarked for closure.

The current consultation period ends on October 1, but RCCG has agreed to look at extending it for a month after calls from Wanstead MP John Cryer and Wanstead and Snaresbrook Residents’ Alliance (WASRA).

A RCCG spokesman said: “As a result of renewed calls for us to look again at a possible extension of the current consultation deadline, beyond its current three month period, GPs behind the proposals are currently considering the request.”

Community group WASRA has launched a campaign against the closure and it has organised a public meeting on the proposal at 7.30pm on September 17 in The George Pub, in High Street, Wanstead .

Member Helen Zammett questioned the timing of the consultation period, which was launched when people were going on holiday in July, and also accused health bosses of putting £929,985 savings by closing the hospital ahead of patient care.

Wanstead MP John Cryer has also criticised the consultation.

But RCCG said patients will receive a better quality of care at King George Hospital and at home.
