A South Woodford Imam has condemned Islamic State militants as "Barbaric" as Muslim leaders call for the release of British aid worker Alan Henning.

Dr Mohammed Fahim, of South Woodford Mosque in Mulberry Way, has joined Muslims across the UK in condemning the extremist movement in Syria and Iraq, which has carried out a number of atrocities.

The group murdered American Journalist James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and British aid worker David Haines.

Dr Fahim has confirmed participation in the London Jumma Peace Day on Friday, which will see Muslims come together to denounce extremism.

He said: “Islam is against these barbaric and inhumane acts, which have been taking place.

"There are no sensible people supporting Islamic State (IS) and at our mosque, we lecture regularly to say that this is not our religion - it is not allowed.”

In a letter to the Independent newspaper, Muslim leaders called for the immediate release of Mr Henning, who was kidnapped in December last year while travelling with an aid convoy in Syria.
