A cadet group won a London-wide military skills competition this weekend.

Wanstead and Woodford Air Cadets, from 241 Squadron Air Training Corps, won the Elworthy Trophy, a Battle of Britian commemorative sword, on Saturday.

The group beat 11 teams of cadets from across London at the Cadet Training Centre in Frimley, Surrey.

The competition tests the military skills of the cadets aged 12 to 18-years-old.

Activities included archery, command tasks, shooting in the indoor ranges and air rifle shooting, rowing, first aid, watermanship skills, a two tonne vehicle pull and a water run.

The Wanstead and Woodford Cadets, based in Finchingfield Avenue, Woodford Green, won overall and their instructor, Alex Sadler, was happy with the effort of his squad.

He said: “I couldn’t be more excited, I’m emotionally and physically drained – spurring them on has been more knackering than actually doing it I think.

“It’s been an absolutely great event and it’s gone really well.

“They started out really hard, they pushed through the whole day and absolutely tanked it, they’ve done so well and I am so pleased for all of them.”
