A man hit by a 4X4 on a zebra crossing has slammed the police for not breathalysing the driver.

Jeff Ross, 55, of Newbury Park, was hit on the the zebra crossing opposite South Woodford tube station yesterday, at around 6.30pm.

Mr Ross says he was flown into the air after being clipped by the wing mirror of the white Ford Kuga.

He said: "I stepped out into the road and saw this flash out of the corner of my eye coming towards me.

"The car flew round the corner at great speed so I put my arm out in a defensive motion. I went flying and landed by the Railway Pub.

"My life flashed before me. I could have been killed."

He managed to avoid serious injury after pushing both his hands out as he fell, but is suffering from chest and arm pain.

In shock, he stood up and confronted the woman driver, who allegedly told him "I didn't see you, I was going too fast."

Mr Ross made four phone calls to the police, who arrived an hour later and allegedly refused to breathalyse the woman.

He added: "An hour was a ridiculous time to wait but I'm more annoyed they didn’t breathalyse her.

"The officer told me they wouldn't because they couldn't smell alcohol on her breath.

"I was going absolutely wild. Getting hit on the road is one thing but getting hit on a zebra crossing is another.

"Maybe I should have called an ambulance or rolled around on the floor in agony for them to take this serious.

"I'm very disappointed by the police's attitude, they simply didn't care I'd been knocked down by a speeding driver."

Mr Ross is appealing to any witnesses who saw the accident to contact the police.

Redbridge police has been approached for a comment.
