A petition has been launched against a planned change to flight paths, amid claims it could create a "noise ghetto" for those living beneath it.

Under current proposals, most planes travelling to and from London City Airport would be installed with new navigation technology, enabling flights to use a narrower flight corridor over Leyton, Leytonstone and Wanstead.

A public consultation on the plans ends on November 27 and Cllr Sheila Bain, of Wanstead ward, said she would be putting forward a motion next month calling on Redbridge council to formally oppose the move.

Waltham Forest council deputy leader Clyde Loakes also last week wrote to City Airport calling for them to contact residents on the proposals.

An online petition was launched by campaign group Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise (HACAN East) on Friday, calling for the plans to be dropped in fear it could create a "noise ghetto" under the path.

On the petition, a spokesman for the group said: "These areas will get more planes then currently should the proposal go through.

"Residents that know about this are hugely concerned about the additional noise.

"Most residents in these areas do not even know about this or how to input into the consultation process."

London City Airport has continually defended the plans, saying it has followed Civil Aviation Authority guidance on consultation, and that the changes would mean little difference to residents under the path.

HACAN East has organised a public meeting on the subject for 7.30pm on November 3 in Wanstead Library, in Spratt Hall Road.
