People celebrating Halloween have been warned that placing candles in pumpkins could have catastrophic consequences.
The London Fire Brigade has urged people to take extra care, saying the practice is the main cause of fires in the home on and around October 31.
It suggests placing the candles on heat resistant holders, keeping the pumpkins away from children, pets, furniture and curtains, and extinguishing them at night and when homes are empty.
Fire officer, Dave Brown, said: “We are not out to try and spoil any fun or celebrations leading up to Halloween, we just don’t want people to risk unnecessary scares.
“Candles should be kept well away from any fabric or clothing that could catch fire, including scary fancy dress costumes and it is vital candles are put out when people leave a room, otherwise the results can be catastrophic.”
