A crackdown on people who park dangerously near schools and “take a chance” with children’s safety” has been launched.

Enforcement officers, police and a CCTV spy car will target offenders with fines near Oakdale Junior in Oakdale Road and Churchfields Junior School, in Churchfields, and Aldersbrook Primary School in Harpenden Road.

Redbridge council will also increase publicity about the problem.

Cabinet member for environment, Cllr Baldesh Nijjar, said: “The school run should not be a time where the safety of children, pedestrians and motorists are put at risk.

“The issue of unsafe parking around certain schools is becoming an increasing problem and we don’t intend to sit idly by and let irresponsible motorists take risks with the safety of our school pupils.

“That’s why we have introduced this pilot, not just to clamp down on the issue but also to send a message to anyone who thinks that they can ignore the rules of the road.”

Churchfields headteacher, Wendy Thomas, welcomed the targeting of those “happy to take a chance with pupils’ safety”.

She said: “While the vast majority of people park safely around the school there are those that don’t and by acting so irresponsibly they risk putting children in danger.”

The council said the scheme may be rolled out across the borough.
