Parents of children at a school involved in the crackdown on people who park dangerously near schools have given a mixed reaction to the initiative.

Redbridge enforcement officers, police and a CCTV spy car are targeting offenders with fines in two South Woodford schools - Oakdale Junior in Oakdale Road and Churchfields Junior School in Churchfields.

In Wanstead, Aldersbrook Primary School in Harpenden Road is also subject to the clampdown.

Redbridge council said it will also increase publicity about the problem and if successful the initiative could be rolled out across the borough.

Cabinet member for environment, Cllr Baldesh Nijjar, said unsafe parking and driving was putting children at risk.

Yesterday at 3.15pm, while no enforcement officers were present, the Guardian spoke to parents outside Aldersbrook Primary, in Wanstead.

Some parents backed the plan on safety grounds.

Aisha Chawdhri, 30, walks her two daughters, Alyshia and Amira, from their home in Aldersbrook Road.

She said: “Some of the manoeuvres I have seen by parents in their cars are just awful.

"I have seen a car just parked in the middle of the road and the kids were taken to school.

“So I would back the scheme, though I am not sure how effective it will be.

The school always says parents should take care but that doesn’t stop them.”

Liz Canavan, 43, walks her children Conrad and Eva from their home in Merlin Road.

She said: “I understand people who drive will not be happy with these measures but I think it is a good initiative by the council to be honest.

“It is really dangerous with hundreds of children coming out the school and to have cars reversing around junctions means someone might get hurt.”

Other parents thought the clampdown was too harsh.

Mark Haynes, 44, drives from East Ham each day to take his nine-year-old daughter, India, to school.

He said: “Lots of people come from miles away and it just won’t work to have to park miles away to walk my daughter to the school.

“It is hard enough to find spaces as it is and I think these measures will just create more problems than they are worth.”
