A woman convicted of murdering an 18-year-old in Woodford Green has won the first stage of her fight to clear her name.

Luke Harwood was punched, kicked and stamped to death and his body hidden under a mattress near playing fields in Broadmead Road after a girl falsely accused him of rape in May 2012.

Emma Jayne Hall, 23, and her boyfriend, Tony O’Toole, 31, both of Romford, and James Peter Danby, 28, were convicted of his murder in April 2013.

They were all handed life sentences, with Hall ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years.

This was increased to 17 years in June 2013 following an intervention by the then Attorney General Dominic Grieve.

Now, the Court of Appeal has confirmed that Hall has been given leave to appeal her conviction after all three made a bid to clear their name on Wednesday.

The young father was attacked on the day he moved into the shared house where Hall and O’Toole lived in Crow Lane, Romford, after an 18-year-old girl accused him of raping her in 2012.

He was bundled into a car owned by Hall and taken to Woodford Green, where the attack continued.

Danby then repeatedly stamped on Mr Harwood's head, causing fatal injuries that left his "face unrecognisable".

They returned the next day with the intention of mutilating Mr Harwood's body using knives and wire cutters so it could not be identified, but Hall tipped off police who arrested them at the scene.

During the sentencing, the trio were also found guilty of perverting the course of justice for burning items of clothing linked to the murder.

Danby and O’Toole were also convicted of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice for plotting to mutilate Luke’s dead body.

At the time, Chief Inspector John Sandlin, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: "The attack on Luke Harwood was unbelievably violent.

"The injuries he suffered were horrific, his face was unrecognisable.

"None of those convicted have taken responsibility for their actions, none of them have shown any remorse."

No date has been set for the hearing.
