A restaurat owner who knocked out a teenager brandishing a meat cleaver and threatening customers has been awarded a top police prize.

Nicky Hunt, owner of Catch fish restaurant in Queens Road, Buckhurst Hill, was sitting in the nearby Coriander Indian on March 1 when a 17-year-old boy brandishing the weapon threatened to kill people inside.

The teenager then entered the take-away and head-butted Mr Hunt. During an ensuing struggle he managed to land a punch and knock the boy out.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of threats to kill, assault, affray and two counts of carrying an offensive weapon.

He pleaded guilty and was placed on a counselling programme.

Mr Hunt was recommended for the Redbridge Borough Commander’s Commendation by the investigating officer.

Mr Hunt said: “It was the most terrifying moment of my life.

“I just did what I had to do. It just happened and my reaction was all instinct. I was in the right place in the right time."

“But I am absolutely chuffed to bits to receive this award, I honestly had no idea I was being nominated.”

"He was so young, I am glad he didn't go to jail - it would not have been good for him."

The award ceremony is being held on January 28 at the Jack Carter Pavilion in Ilford.
