MP Harry Cohen has refused to apologise over his controversial expenses.

The member for Leyton and Wanstead blamed a flawed system and considers his 'rebel' status as jusitifaction for the claims - including a pineapple slicer and garlic press - as not towing the party line has jeopodised his career.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday published leaked documents which apparently show Mr Cohen spent thousands on redecorating a "second home" before selling it on and claiming £12,000 in stamp duty and fees on a new house.

Mr Cohen said: "As you know I have been a rebel on numerous occasions over the years, including the Iraq war.

"I have never sought to increase my remuneration by advancing my career at the expense of principle.

I am a full-time MP dedicated to serve my constituents.

"Of course the system is deeply flawed and needs to be changed. The public will not be satisfied with anything less.

"Where the minor errors have slipped in I will calculate the amount to be repaid. I supported Gordon Brown recently and voted to reduce my own allowances by over £17,000.

"I regret that the complete abolition of second homes allowance did not succeed due to the opposition parties thwarting it.

"I have consistently supported the position that MPs pay and conditions should be determined independently, and not by MPs themselves."
