CAMPAIGNERS fighting the increase in flights from London City Airport have hailed the Boris Johnson for backing their call for a public inquiry.

Members of Fight the Flights, who oppose the increase in air traffic over parts of east London including Wanstead, said that the Mayor had said a public inquiry would be necessary given residents' concerns that the Civil Aviation Authority could review proposed new flights paths in private.

Mayor Johnson was attending a meeting on the environment, alongside an expert panel, at a meeting at the Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford last night (January 18).

A spokesman for the group said: “This is great news that we have won the backing of Boris for a public review.

“Residents were not properly consulted before the flight path was introduced. Now is the time for a proper consultation.

“We feel residents will give a resounding 'No' to the flight path."
