REDBRIDGE: ID cards available from next month

YOUNG people aged 16 to 24 in Redbridge will be able to apply for a National Identity Card from next month.

The controversial cards, which have been blasted as “pointless” and “a waste of money” by critics, will be available in London from February 8 at a cost of £30.

They could be used instead of a passport when travelling in Europe and as proof of age when buying age restricted products.

Young people will still need to use passports for travel outside Europe.

Home Office minister Meg Hillier said the £30 cost for the card was a "pretty good deal" but the Tories have said they would scrap the scheme if they come to power.
