BUDDING young mathematicians have shown off their sum-solving skills during a prestigious national competition.

Pupils from years five and six at Bancroft's Prep School in Woodford Green, put their abilities to the test during the Primary Maths Challenge - winning a collection of top prizes in the process.

The Bancroft's youngsters were awarded four gold, ten silver and nine bronze certificates during the annual contest, which involved thousands of other schoolchildren from across the UK>

School spokeswoman Karen Rogers, praised the efforts of the youngsters who took part in the competition - which consisted of a test of multiple-choice mathematical questions.

She said: "Eight of our pupils, including one talented year five pupil, scored exceptionally well and were invited to take part in the PMC Finals which took place on February 3.

"These eight young mathematicians are now eagerly awaiting their results."

The contest was organised by the Mathematical Association.

Continuing the maths theme, the Happy Puzzle Company recently visited the school to run a series of workshops for all year groups, with the aim of proving that maths really is fun.

The workshops were designed to encourage and develop skills in a range of skills such as lateral thinking, spatial awareness, visual perception and teamwork.

Each session involved a series of games and puzzles which needed to be solved through teamwork and communication.
