SCHOOLCHILDREN will be encouraged to nag their parents to choose Fairtrade goods during the weekly shop - as part of a new borough-wide initiative.
Pupils and teachers from schools and sixth forms across Redbridge will be given advise on how they can do their bit to help fight poverty in the developing world during a special information day to be held on Monday March 1.
A council spokeswomans said the Fairtrade event will involve a variety of interactive workshops and attendees will get the chance to speak - via video conferencing - to youngsters from a school in rural Ghana, which was built using cash from the sale of Fairtrade Divine and Dubble chocolate.
She said: "Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 22 February to 7 March and is an annual nationwide campaign to promote awareness of Fairtrade and encourage people to buy products which carry the Fairtrade Mark to help producers in developing countries.
"Why not swap your usual brand of wine, sugar, fruit or socks for Fairtrade ones.
"There are now over 4,000 products available. Each swap will be proof that the UK wants developing world producers to get a better deal.
"Retailers and companies are also being urged to back the campaign making it easy for shoppers to choose Fairtrade goods."
