LEYTON/WANSTEAD: Labour candidate named

THE Labour prospective parliamentary candidate (PPC) has been named as John Cryer, early reports suggest.

The ballots from party members were counted this afternoon, revealing Mr Cryer as the PPC after an eight-month wait for a shortlist.

Mr Cryer is the former MP for Hornchurch and lost his seat in 2005.

He is also a national political officer with union Unite.

If elected, he has pledged to “work tirelessly to keep Leyton and Wanstead Labour and to campaign on behalf of local people”.

His opponents, Conservative PPC Ed Northover and Lib Dem Farooq Qureshi, have already been campaigning in the area for months, leading to fears Labour could have lost considerable ground.

Mr Cryer has since set up a website, listing his priorities if he becomes MP for the constituency.

You can find it at johncryer.co.uk

If the Guardian is going to put a direct link to the labour candidate on this website, why is it not putting similar links up at the same time for the Conservative and Liberal Democrat candidates with this article?

Good point Techno2!

Mind you John Cryer being parachuted in over the heads of the local Labour party members and their wishes is not exactly a surprise.

Ultimately the people of Leyton and Wanstead have a clear choice between genuinely local candidates who already work hard for them and contribute to the community by way of their Council service or a Labour carpetbagger who is just taking their support for granted and does not live in the constituency or even know much about it.

Who is John Cryer and for that matter who are Ed Northover or Farooq Qureshi? Why should the citizens of Redbridge vote to elect any of these characters simply on the basis of a party label? Give them all a psychiatric examination before you give any of 'em even one vote!

There are candidates from other parties who might want their websites to be shown. For UKIP the national site is www.ukip.org from where individual candidate details will be available shortly. All policies are there to be seen.
