WOODFORD GREEN: Teaching assistants to picket during strike

UNION members will picket a Woodford Green primary school tomorrow in a continuing dispute over pay.

General workers’ union GMB confirmed teaching assistants at Roding Primary School will protest tomorrow morning as part of a second planned walk out.

It is believed up to 34 staff will be involved in the strike and the council has said the nursery will close during the day, although the rest of the school will remain open.

The picket is to take place at 8am as the school gates open.

The first walk out took place last week in a pay row as teaching assistants claim they are being underpaid.

The local authority has condemned the strike, saying it is “dismayed” the decision was taken.

A pay review was recently carried out in schools across the borough and the council has said it would not be “practical or cost effective” to give Roding a separate review.

It also denied claims the governing body had refused to hold talks and said it was open to discussion with the union.

It has also been reported GMB strike action could be on the cards for three more Redbridge schools, including Hatton School, in Roding Lane South, Woodford Green.

The local authority has condemned the strike, saying it is “dismayed” the decision was taken. This sounds like Gordon Brown, he condemned the BA strike. Why do they always come down on the side of the employer? Why don't the press print what the emploees actually earn? What we have time and time again are knee-jerk condemnations without any evidence of why workers feel forced to strike. What about the inconvenienced passenger? What about the poor suffering children? We hear this time and time again. Here is my question. Do we want people who fly us and teach our kids to be badly paid badly paid? I don't.
