A PARLIAMENTARY candidate who suffered death threats and anti-semitic abuse whilst campaigning in Redbridge said the experience has simply made him more determined to succeed.
Former Ilford North MP Lee Scott said he has been spurred on in his battle for re-election after being confronted by two Asian youths near Charlie Brown's roundabout in South Woodford, who threatened to kill him before making an offensive comment about his Jewish faith.
Mr Scott, a Conservative, said he and his family had been left deeply upset by the incident - but vowed to continue the fight to regain the seat.
He said: "I was walking back to my car on my own with my rosette on and these two youths came up to me and said 'we want to kill you, you Jewish pig.'
"I was quite taken aback, so I responded with a bit of humour and said 'I'll put you down as possibles to vote for me then shall I?'
"Looking back I'm quite surprised that I came out with that, but I'm glad I did.
"It's very sad, but these things happen.
"There has also been nasty things written about me on various websites which has not been very nice.
"I'm sad to say that I've encountered anti-semitism before."
If re-elected Mr Scott said he would continue to represent the interests of all communities in Redbridge no matter what race or religion.
He said: "As an MP I always worked for all my constituents, and would continue to do so if I was elected again.
"There are Asian people from a variety of religions canvassing for me, and I'm very grateful for their wonderful support.
"There are obviously some people around who don't like me, but I won't let that affect me.
"I just hope to be given another opportunity to represent the people of Ilford North, because it's a job I love."
Mr Scott said police were still investigating the incident, which took place last Tuesday afternoon (April 20).
