WOODFORD GREEN: School set for Pope visit

A CATHOLIC school is ready to celebrate the Pope visiting the UK and a former pupil will be meeting him.

Trinity High School, in Mornington Road, Woodford Green, has a handful of events planned for later this month to mark the historic event.

On September 16 there will be a special prayer and celebration event at the school in honour of the visit.

Also that day former pupil James Bainbridge, a 22-year-old art graduate, is set to unveil a painting of the Pope which is likely to be hung in the school's main hall.

On September 17 there is a celebration of catholic education at St Mary's University, Twickenham, and the school has about 10 pupils attending.

Paschal Uche, who left the school last summer, is set to attend a mass at Westminter Cathedral on September 18, where he is set to welcome the Pope.

Finally, later that evening, 50 representatives of the school will be at the open air prayer vigil at Hyde Park.

Rick Law, a spokesman for the school, said: "As it happens I'm not a catholic myself, but something like this generates so much interest because the Pope is such a major figure.

"There will certainly be a buzz around the school."

If this papal visit were purely a pastoral one, as was the case on the previous occasion, I'd say fair enough, even though I'm a secularist. But this is a state visit and Pope Benedict is being accorded the welcome due to a head of state. But what is this state he is jead of? The Vatican State is nothing more than a vast ecclesiastical organisation, effectively one big church and although this may legally constitute an independent state it is not one in any other meaningful sense. Besides, the histories of both this pope and the 'state' he represents are exteremely problematic. Pope Benedict was a member of the Hitler Youth as a teenager and his 'state' was founded by the Lateran Pact signed with the fascist leader, Mussolini, in 1929. The taint of fascism and the Vatican's views on homosexuality (indeed, any sexuality), birth control, condoms vis-a-vis HIV/AIDS, the role of women and celibacy in the priesthood are all abhorrent. In any other circumstances such a head of state would be persona non grata but we accord this man an official welcome - and we have to pay for it. Outrageous!
