COUNCIL budget proposals to cut back garden waste collections faced further opposition at a committee meeting last night (January 31).
The measure would see current weekly collections cut back to a fortnightly schedule and save £50,000 a year.
But councillors across the borough have opposed the measure, and last night at an Area Two meeting in Sir James Hawkey Hall, Woodford Green, it was agreed that councillors would oppose the proposal.
Roding Ward Cllr Gwyneth Deakins told the committee: “This would end up costing us money because it would lead to more fly tipping.”
And she added: “The signal it would send at a time when we need to be improving our recycling is the wrong one.”
And Monkhams Cllr Linda Huggett added: “This represents a false economy.
“The council pay £128 for every ton sent to landfill and £98 for every ton sent for recycling.”
Areas One and Three have also agreed to recommend that Cabinet drop the plan.
