PARKING restrictions are causing drivers to leave their vehicles dangerously close to junctions, it is claimed.

Households in Leicester Road, Grove Park and The Avenue have noticed increased congestion since the introduction of a controlled parking zone in streets nearby.

But their main concern is vehicles being left close to junctions, which limits visibility and creates a hazard for drivers negotiating tight corners.

There are calls for action to tackle the problem before there is an accident.

Malcolm Dowers, of Counties Residents' Association (CRA), said: "Over the last few months we have noticed cars parking closer to the junctions, making them difficult to see out of when you pull out.

"The junctions are no longer as safe as they once were and we feel that yellow lines would help."

Chairwoman of the CRA, Helen Zammett, said the problem is compounded by reckless drivers.

She said: "Cars come flying down the roads at great speed and when they spot you, they try and stop to wave you through, but often there isn't room to pull over because cars park so close to the corner.

"This is about improving safety, not about not wanting people parking on our streets."

Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Sue Nolan, said she is taking the residents' concerns seriously.

She said: "I have raised the issue with my officers and it has been added to our list.

"I can't say how long or how soon the lines will come in, but it will be acted upon if there is a need for them."
