POLICE are appealing for witnesses after the death of an 80-year-old driver two months after a crash in Woodford Green.

David Baker, 80, of Princes Road, Buckhurst Hill, was sitting in his silver Ford escort at traffic lights in Broadmead Road, at the junction with Charteris Road, just before 2pm on July 24 when a dark blue Mercedes ploughed into the rear of his vehicle.

Mr Baker, of Princes Road, Buckhurst Hill, and a woman in her 80s, believed to be his wife, were taken to Whipps Cross Hospital in Leytonstone.

But he died on September 12 from multiple organ failure.

The female passenger has made a full recovery.

Road safety campaigner Susan Lazarus, 57, of Broadmead Road, organised a petition for traffic calming measures after a series of crashes and near misses near her home in 2009.

She said: "We are all delighted that the calming measures have been introduced but sadly you only need to look out your window to see cars are still driving way too fast.

"This is a terrible tragedy, but it seems whatever they try to do to stop it, people are just determined to zoom down here at dangerous speeds."

Last year, the council introduced £90,000 of safety measures, including a new zebra crossing and parking restrictions to meet concerns raised in the petition.

A man in his 60s was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed to return to an east London police station in October.

Witnesses are asked to call the Road Death Investigation Unit based at Chadwell Heath on 020 8597 4874.
