MAYORAL candidate Boris Johnson says City banks should give more to help tackle the capital's gang culture.

The Conservative mayoral candidate has outlined plans for a Mayor's Fund to encourage financial institutions to use their profits to help some of London's most vulnerable people.

Mr Johnson said he wanted the mayor's office to push those who benefit most from London to show more awareness of the problems caused by deprivation.

He said further details would be revealed as his campaign progresses.

Ken Livingstone's campaign team dismissed Johnson's scheme as "flim-flam" and said the fund would not raise as much cash as has already been committed to youth projects by their candidate.

Liberal Democrat candidate Brian Paddick insisted a proper financial audit of City Hall was needed before such a fund could be set up, while the Green Party claimed that relying on voluntary contributions from the City was unsustainable.
