POLICE descended on the streets of Epping in response to fears that armed gang violence was about to erupt at the weekend.

Officers were deployed in the town centre on Friday following reports of 'planned disruption' and a knife was found dumped near a checkpoint.

A metal detector arch was set up at Epping Station and Club 195.

The identification markings had been scratched off the illegal three-inch lock blade, which was discovered near a checkpoint on Saturday.

Epping Forest District Commander Jonathan Baldwin told the Guardian: "This is certainly a nasty knife, and one which could kill people so we want everyone to know we are actively seeking people carrying knives, and that we will not tolerate it in our district."

He said the public had done a fantastic job in assisting officers, and that the incident proved what great results can be achieved when the community supports the police.

He said that about 60 youths, many thought to be from the Loughton area, had gathered on Epping High Street, but that it was not something to be unduly concerned about.

He said the nice weather was the likely reason for the impromptu gathering, and that rumours of "planned disruption" were most likely due to "Chinese whispers".

Epping Forest District Council safer communities officer Paul Gardener said the discovery of the knife was a concern.

He said: "Anyone carrying a weapon in public causes a big concern because it could result in a terrible tragedy.

"But we have to keep things in perspective, and we want to address the fear of knife crime, as well as the crime itself.

"But it is a worry to find a weapon like this on our streets, and it is something we take very seriously."

Caroline Wiggins, council's safer communities manager, said local police have two metal-detecting archways at their disposal and will be using them at stations and other locations to discourage people from carrying weapons.

"It's one of many initiatives we have had a lot of success with, and there are more to come," she said.

While there have been no serious attacks so far, it only takes a fight to go out of hand before a young person is killed. Since these are mostly young people, all parents have a responsibility to ensure that their children are knife-free before they go out, or their sons and daughters could be the next knife victims. Irresponsible parenting is a root cause of knife crime.

When are these nonsense "Community Safety" wombles going to realise that knife crime is real and rampant and that this myth that it is all only about "fear of crime" is exactly that, a myth. They really should all go back to their previous jobs as benefit clerks and housing officers and leave dealing with our ever increasing violent crime epidemic to the Police, who are, unlike them, actually professionals.

Yes, still no show of real policemen on streets just 'star trek transporter, folding, token, arches of nick' for mostly innocent people and OAP's to be guided through when the real knife carrying ferals are on the opposite side of the road watching and laughing. Plastic 'community police' get plastic results. We need to reclaim the streets and get rid of the filth. Has anyone seen outside ASDA Leyton on a Sunday? Beyond belief last week. Over 30 DVD sellers and 3 gangs of 3 card Tricksters. Not a Policeman in sight. All of these are illegal immigrants laughing at this Country. It is finished for sure.

i think that these gangs are sad they think they are hard going into other towns carrying knieves its not like the old days when we used to have a fist fight no weapons but now teenagers think its cool to carry a affensive weapon such as a knieve, i think that have these metal detecting arches are a good idea and should be in place at underground stations PERMITALLY to stop people from carrying knieves and to stop teenage killings.

they had a 'token' arch at Loughton Station the other - complete waste of time - coppers just sitting around doing nothing. Anyone with a knife would have just got back on the platform - make them permanent or don't bother
