REDBRIDGE: Pensioner sent obscene letters to barmaid
Obsessed Gordon Peters outside court
Obsessed Gordon Peters outside court

A OBSESSED 75-year-old has admitted sending more than 200 obscene letters to a young barmaid he became infatuated with.

Foul-mouthed Gordon Peters, of Balfour Road in Ilford, sent notes calling 23-year-old Italian Anna Guled a prostitute and a drug dealer, to three east London pubs where she worked.

The pensioner - who has a false leg - wrote obscenities and her telephone number on the envelopes he sent her, leading to people passing by the buildings' communal postboxes to call up demanding sex.

He also sent rants about the young woman to Ilford Police, Barking Police and even a professor at Kent University.

Sergeant Graham Clarke, of Valentines ward Safer Neighbourhood Team, said that he tried to deal with Peters through social services, meals on wheels, and every other possible avenue but he refused to desist.

He added: "This young lady befriended Peters as she took pity on him because of his disability. But he became possessive and she wanted nothing more to do with him. So he started sending her all sorts of false accusations that are truly disgusting. It took one of our community support officers nine hours to type up all the letters for evidence."

Peters appeared at Redbridge Magistrates Court on Tuesday, April 29, to plead guilty to breaching an ASBO forbidding him from writing to any licensed premises, contacting Miss Guled, her boss Katrina Quinn, or complaining to the police or Redbridge Council without going through a lawyer.

He was previously sentenced to five months imprisonment for similar offences last August - when the ASBO was first issued - but continued to send his hate mail from behind bars.

The court heard that even since his arrest on March 26 police have had reports of 20 more obscene telephone calls to the pubs where Ms Guled worked, the Black Horse and Maguires, in Chapel Road, Ilford, but that so far no further prosecution has been brought.

Peters was bailed to Redbridge Magistrates Court return for sentencing on June 10 pending the preparation of psychiatric reports.

He was told in court that in the light of his previous convictions and his continued flouting of the ASBO a prison term may well be necessary.
