A GIRL raised money for war veterans by decorating a cake with edible poppies last week.

Xanthe Woolnoth, 6, of Studley Avenue in Highams Park, collected £14 from delighted neighbours who bought slices of the Hummingbird cake she helped her mum bake the Saturday before Remembrance Sunday.

But the finishing touches were all her own idea, and she proudly knocked from door to door selling the cake after learning about the victims and survivors of war at Handsworth Primary School in Handsworth Avenue.

Mum Yioda Woolnough, 35, said: "The cake was gone in no time. I'm so proud of her."
