Anger over failures to clear fly-tipping

FAILURES to clear fly-tipped rubbish have caused rats to descend on a residential street and gnaw on people's front doors, it is claimed.

Exasperated resident Khalid Rashid, 47, says Poplars Road in Walthamstow has been plagued by fly-tippers persistently over the last six months but the council had repeatedly failed to clear it promptly.

In the latest incident he contacted the council last month to report a new pile of smelly refuse and furniture dumped near his home - but staff have still not picked it up more than two weeks later.

He said: "It's blocking the pavement, it's a health hazard and it's dangerous.

"The council claims to be tackling 'enviro-crime' but I haven't seen any of that here.

"We have two children in our house and it's disgusting they have to be exposed to this on their doorstep.

"The problem has got really bad recently. I probably contact the council about once a week now and sometimes they do come and collect it, but they seem very blasé about it.

"It's attracted rats who are running around and have been gnawing on doors.

"We had bite marks on our front door. It's really disgusting."

Mr Rashid believes the perpetrators responsible for the fly-tipping are the same people each time, with the rubbish being dumped often comprising a mixture of household black bin bags, furniture like mattresses and commercial waste like wood.

"I'm getting to the end of my tether," he added. "I just want the council to take it seriously".

A council spokesman said the authority was considering installing CCTV at the site.

He added: “we were originally told that it was a trade waste issue, which is dealt with in a slightly different way to fly-tipping.

“We’re looking into why the delay occurred and someone will be on their way to the site shortly.”

Now, who was saying on this site only the other day that they never see such activity?

Step forward please Mr NDevito, you may wander around wearing Cranberry Tinted Spectacles but like I said the other day, this kind of activity is happening daily all over Walthamstow in particular.

The Council are losing control of the situation, nothing really can be done as they rarely get caught. When they do, they receive such paltry sentences that it is no deterrent.

The only way forward is to pay anyone with a van £30.00 or so to take rubbish they find on the street to the tip and to allow everyone in with rubbish free of charge.

Purely? Nope. Purely fly tipping. blatantly criminal illegal activity, nothing else. You don't see legit builders etc doing this.

Maybe the Authorities could hold a Waste Day at the Station like Cllr. Loakes did at Leytonstone and pile all the waste and mattresses in a heap and have a forum where people could discuss alternatives and have a mattress of the week competition and dig out all the old bits of wood from their shed which they thought would come in useful one day but then realised it was junk and just chucked it with a few mattresses that were dumped over the road and then the pile grows larger by the day, as their neighbours add to it.

The problem is, that whilst that stuff has been there for a while some of the locals may have problems in actually phoning in to report it because of the language barriers. All those side streets off the bakers Arms and Hoe Street in particular have problems. There are a lot of privately rented properties there.

I am informed that there is a small road there called Akins Road around bakers Arms where locals actually think it is an official place to put your unwanted items.

In many European Countries there are small sites dedicated for such use and the Council equivalent regularly turn up and take away deposited items without any fuss or jobsworth attitude and less red tape.

Here when you report it they want you to accurately describe each item of dumped rubbish.

Lovely story. Needs more rhymes.

Once again ignores the commercial aspect of the story and still includes no apology for your earlier blatant lies.

The simple process for having things collected involves calling them up and telling them what it is so that they can send one the right vehicle and two know what to do with the item for recycling/disposal purposes.

Sounds to me like you are again trying to justify illegal actions.

I clearly outlined council policy, i cannot see no language problems in this story, try reading it again, dont insult people who care about their borough and try to keep it clean where the council are failing, you may work in the borough, but you dont seem to do much work, if you know so much about every street in it.

Cornbeefur reply to this

"Here when you report it they want you to accurately describe each item of dumped rubbish"

They ask the amount of items and type so that they know what size van to send out as they have other locations they also collect from.
if Kier have a small van local to the report being made and the items are small they can collect quicker.
whats so difficult about this?

This is awful for the man/street. I cant stand fly tipping. I have had a positive response in the past when Ive reported fly tipping online to the council- swiftly clearing it up on both occassions. Also positive/quick results when Ive reported a few vandalised/abandoned cars in my area. Hopefully this will continue and they sort their service out for the area reported in the story!

firstly im gonna keep to the story....2 problems arise here, firstly that the council or the contarctors (Kier) they have awarded the street cleaning contract to are failing, no great suprises there then. If there policy is to clear it within a working day of it being reported then they are clearly not doing their job and should be punished!

secondly, people (residents) whether they can speak English or not obviously have no standards and morals, some of this rubbish may be commercial but the matresses and pizza boxes certainly are not, fact is people just dont give a flying you know what about where they live anymore and unfortunately those kind of people used to be the minority but that type of person now seems to be in the majority in this borough.

right now for soemthing a little off tangent.....why has everyone got such a hard on for this cornbeef person, this is a comments page, if someone says something you dont agree with or believe not to be true, whay on earth would you lable it as lies and demand an apology? its someones opinion...thats it, get a frickin grip will you people!!

Unfortunately, some people cannot bear the truth or an opinion and can only answer with venomous insults.

The efforts of Kwatt-Loin is beyond comprehension, but I am aware that among the critics are a few silent browsers who do not need to be pointed in any direction by desperate posters with 'he said this and that comments'.

Now they alleging through paranoia, that you are in fact me!

With respect to this Story and the dumped rubbish, it is obvious to anyone that the two mattresses have come from the local area by person(s) who have just added them to the ever increasing pile or visa versa.

I doubt if this has been 'fly tipped' by a commercial rubbish remover as there is not an awful lot there.

Also, Cllr. Loakes has recently been highlighting the issues regarding dumped beds.

If you would do a little research you'd see that Cornbeefur is a serial troll on this website. Preferred approach is to make comment then tangentially insult whichever area or easy target.
