A cyclist was killed this morning in a hit and run accident.

The man was hit on Gainsborough Road, close to Leytonstone tube station, at around 6.30am.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car fled the accident, but a suspect was found nearby and was arrested along with two other men.

The cyclist has not yet been formally identified and his next of kin have not yet been informed.

A London Ambulance spokesman said: "Sadly despite extensive treatment he was pronounced dead at the scene by the doctor."

The cyclist is reported to be a man in his 30s.

Gainsborough Road remains closed in both directions between Lemna Road and Fairlop Road.

Buses are still stopping at the tube station.

Seconded. Some hope though as he'll probably just get a "slap on the wrist" fine and / or maybe a few points on his licence (if he has one). We don't know the circumstances as to what happened, but the fact he failed to stop justifies your "scumbag" description.

No matter who was to blame for this horrible accident, it's clear that this wouldn't have happened if there had been a seperate cycle lane. There is plenty of space in this section of the A106 to build one.. just like in Ruckholt Road which was the scene of another lethal accident recently. We need a proper infrastructure right now.

The fact that despite your grief you are still able to thank someone who tried to help your father is a tribute to how well he raised you and says more about him (and you) in a few short words than a posting lasting a 1000 words, we're sorry for your loss

A man with a family died only this morning. This is neither the time nor place to discuss the respective rights and wrongs of cyclists and drivers.
Yes please stop unless expressing condolences (like you have not) and as usual have just muscled in with empty waffle and noise.

I express my condolences as whatever the circumstances, this is a tragedy and I personally would like to express my sorrow for the poor victim's family.

Cycling around Town is a really dangerous form of transport these days and the Local Authority must make this safer as despite promoting car free means of travel, they must provide the infrastructure.

Well I work with the gentleman I was with him an hour before it happened. I'm disgusted that anyone uses this as a chance to voice an argument and to write anything else except condolences . R.I.P. Mate if half these young lads were half the man you are we would once again be Great Britain.

Agreed.

I'd also like to see automatic heavy penalties for anyone committing a hit-and-run offence. Hit-and-run used to be rare and in now commonplace. Time to make sure it's in no one's selfish interests to leave someone injured.

I've worked with your father on and off for 10 years and I just wanted to say that you would never meet a more happy-go-lucky and unselfish man. Always willing to help and never a cross word. All of his colleagues are devestated by this tragedy and cannot believe that such a generous man has been taken from us. My condolences to yourselves and your family. I hope that his family can take something from the fact that he was so well thought of.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late cyclist.

I've cycled over that spot many times. The traffic is fast and heavy and there is absolutely no reason why vulnerable cyclists should be made to mix with it. If LBWF have any sense they will respond to this tragic and wasteful loss of a life by using some of the enormous amount of spare room to the side of the road to build a safe, physically segregated cycle route.
