The smell in the tunnel is caused by leaking sewage.
The tunnel continues to have problems with water leaking in from the roof and the walls. All the past week a section of the tunnel has been barricaded off because of water (I hope its only water!) leaking from a wall.
There are very big questions to be asked about the standards of construction used to build this tunnel. Who is picking up the bill for all the years of repairs? Users of London transport I expect, not the builders.

I forgot to say I don't think the tunnel is included in this weekend's refurbishment. I think it's just the bus station, not the link to the station.

I've just come back from the town centre. There was no sign of anyone working at the bus station - no workers, no vehicles, no anything.

I can second that just come through Walthamstow Central and no work being done, absolute joke. The Tunnel has always been a joke, the stairs are way too steep and the lift is nearly always out of order a complete waste of money.

It's only been open a few years. Outrageous that it needs refurbishment already. How was the contract awarded? And as Tom Thumb says, who's picking up the bill?

As for that endless Stairway to Heaven - great training ground for athletes. For anyone with children, shopping or luggage, it's a joke. Have we forgotten how to make escalators?
