Firm adopts green and healthy system
A business has invested in a cutting-edge system which dry cleans clothes without harming workers or the environment.
Vinn Cleaners in Hoe Street, Walthamstow, is now using ‘The Lagoon’ system, which uses water and detergent to clean delicate garments, instead of traditional solvents used in dry cleaning.
These chemicals have been banned in some parts of America because they are believed to be harmful to workers and are so harsh they can damage clothes.
The system looks like a large washing machine, but is computerised to set the exact amount of water, detergent and washing speed appropriate for delicate fabrics.
Owner Aziz Shaik, 43, says the new system, developed by Electrolux, solves key problems in the industry.
Workers suffering from respiratory problems due to prolonged exposure to solvents are believed to be common, while chemicals used in traditional dry-cleaning are harmful to the environment.
Mr Shaik, who believes it is the only system of its kind in Waltham Forest, said: “It’s been the best thing I’ve ever done in my 22 years in this business.”
Mr Shaik made the decision to adopt the new system, which is cheaper to run, after seeing it in action in other businesses.
“The end product was completely different to dry cleaning. Clothing smelled fresh like you’d just bought it,” he said.
“My staff love it now they’re working in a nicer environment.”
