WALTHAMSTOW: Church celebrates its 900th birthday

AN HISTORIC Walthamstow church has held a special display to celebrate its 900th birthday.

Visitors to St Mary's Church in Walthamstow village were able to view a wide range of old photographs from the area's past and were given personal historical accounts of growing up in E17 by a group of elderly residents.

The display was brought up to date with drawings, photographs and essays by local schoolchildren, giving their perspective on modern life in Walthamstow.

A tour of the bell tower was also available for the more adventurous visitors to the free event, which is due to finish later this week.

What a beautiful historic place. It's a real asset to the whole community as it often hosts concerts, exhibitions etc. Thank God it's not owned by the council or they'd have closed it down!
