COUNCIL Leader Clyde Loakes is on the shortlist to become the next Labour candidate for the Northampton South constituency.

He is one of five candidates being considered to stand in the next general election.

He now has until November 1 to convince Labour Party members in the constituency that he is the man to get the seat back from the Tories, after Brian Binley MP took it from Labour in 2005.

Cllr Loakes grew up close to Northampton but has not lived there since he went to University.

He has been a councillor in Waltham Forest for ten years and leader for five.

He said that although he considers London his home he still has a connection with Northampton.
