WALTHAMSTOW: Health fears over planned phone mast

A PHONE mast proposed for a residential street has sparked fears over potential health risks to children.

Proposed for Jewel Road, Walthamstow, the mast will apparently serve another borough, leaving residents outraged.

The Guardian has seen a planning application document, stamped by the council, which states the mast will “provide coverage in Newham” - but information from phone company UK01 contradicts this.

A spokesman for the start-up company stated that the mast would not be powerful enough to provide service as far away as Newham.

He added: “The public’s exposure to radio frequency from UK01 base stations is a tiny fraction of guidelines set by the International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection.

“The radio frequency power of any UK01 hub is limited to 200 milliwatts.”

But Suzie McKenzie-Young, 43, whose home is close to the site, fears children and vulnerable residents will be at increased risk of cancer caused by radio frequency emitted by the mast.

She said: “It’s a very highly populated road and a thoroughfare down to Lloyd Park.

“I went down to the planning office and the application is from a company in Watford. They said it’s the first of many. They seem to think Walthamstow is a soft target.”

All new masts must conform to strict guidelines, but concerns are rife as the proposed site is just a few streets away from Greenleaf Primary School.

Mrs McKenzie-Young said: “The residents are very, very against it. There are children, pregnant women and elderly people living here and if it goes ahead, it’s them who are at risk.”

Philippa Phelps, 38, a probation officer, who also lives nearby, added her concerns, saying protests were gathering against the proposal.

“We just feel that having this within the street is going to create an industrial feel and increase anti-social behaviour,” she said.

“It’s coming up in a poor area and they’re presuming no one’s going to do anything.”

UK01 have also attempted to allay fears their masts will be eyesores, stating they will be using existing structures wherever possible and will also use methods such as site sharing and designing pole structures to look like street lamps.

They aim to be operational by December in Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Barking and Dagenham.

I bet every adult in the picture and several of the children have a mobile phone?

All a load of radiated hot air and a case of NIMBY!

All moaning about poor phone signal one minute and then getting the paper down when an aerial goes up!

Mobile phone mast microwave emissions do not adhere to any guidelines that protect the public. These international guidelines were only designed for one thing. To protect the Industry and their profits! The ICNIRP international guidelines, trumpeted by government and phone operators as providing protection to the general public from phone mast electro magnetic radiation emissions, were introduced in 1992 in the technology's infancy. They were introduced not by scientists, but by technicians. They completely ignored researching the most damaging effects to the human body of these radiation emissions, i.e. measuring the biological, vibrational effects on the human body and damage to cells. They only researched the thermal (heating) effects of the emissions on dead meat! This absurdity is all that stands between us and the risk of life threatening or chronic disease. These (ICNIRP) guidelines as 'protection' are equivalent to a fireguard in front of a defective gas fire that is emitting carbon monoxide - it might stop you getting burned but you might not be alive to care!

80% of WHO research proves that this technology is not safe. Over 2000 independent studies, linking phone mast electro magnetic radiation with serious ill health including cancer, confirm that phone masts should not be sited within 350 metres of schools or housing. Numerous studies have proved that melatonin, the cancer fighting hormone, is suppressed by this pulsing radiation. That's why the cancer clusters continue to increase in the vicinity of phone masts.

Is this why you cleared off to Bristol Mr. Elliot?

Mobile phones! What a load of poppycock and old boots! In my day people used to talk to each other. None of your Fancy Dan new fangled technology for me, thank you very much!

This is good news. The mobile coverage in E17 is ropey at best.

Parents should be assured that there is no evidence whatsoever that mobile phone masts cause medical harm. These made-up scare stories do nobody any good and detract from real campaigns about real issues.

(On the subject of which, how is the Kick out Kier campaign getting on?!)

Phil - that is almost funny !
Which campaigns do you class as "real" and what have you done to further them ? Brown - nosing councillors does not count as a legitimate response by the way

So E17, parents should be assured that there is no evidence of harm from these masts! You must be a phone operator! Over 2000 independent studies, linking phone mast electro magnetic radiation with serious ill health including cancer, confirms that phone masts should not be sited within 350 metres of schools or housing. Numerous studies have proved that melatonin, the cancer fighting hormone, is suppressed by this pulsing radiation. That's why the cancer clusters continue to increase in the vicinity of phone masts. Phone operators dismiss such research, alleging that their own studies suggest no health risk. However last year the national press revealed that a phone operator covered up the damaging results of their own research. The Ecolog Institute, a research organisation which examines the health effects of mobile phones, was commissioned to investigate the possible health risks of mobile phone masts. The 2003 Ecolog report confirmed:

'Given the results of the present epidemiological studies, it can be concluded that electromagnetic fields with frequencies in the mobile telecommunications range do play a role in the development of cancer. This is particularly notable for tumours of the central nervous system.'

Very reassuring E17!

Obviously J Elliott will only use a public phone for his phone calls in case any stray mobile phone rays come & zap him!

And I assume none of the people complaining have or want a mobile phone either as theyre much too dangerous to put in their pocket!

J Elliot is spot on with everything he says - we all need to take heed.

Coal miners used to take canaries down the coal mines to check they were "safe" before the invention of the Humphrey Davey lamp. Our modern day canaries are those we hear have already suffered serious ill health due to modulated (pulsed) signals emitted by mobile phone masts.

Until recently, there was no need to put up masts in or near schools or residential areas, but telecoms companies paid a fortune to the government for 3G licences so IT freaks can access the Internet to download music, pictures, videos, etc. on to their laptops and PCs at home. It's got nothing at all to do with mobile phones - they are well served already with 2G/GSM where there is no need to put masts into residential areas. Internet usage zaps up the power output from 3G masts and all those who don't use it still have to put up with the eyesore and the pulsed signals affecting the brain and nervous system. There is new research to show actual genetic damage from 3G -it's not scaremongering, as the evidence is there if you take the trouble to look for it. Google on on 'pineal' and 'melatonin' 'RF' or 'EMF' and 'mobile phone mast' to see the information for yourselves.

There is a move from the European Parliament to introduce the new standards as the ICNIRP standard based on the thermal (heating) effect is obsolete. That explains why the operators are desperate to put up the 3G masts before the new standard comes in to reduce power by tens of thousands less than the current emissions - because 3G would then become far too weak for accessing the Internet.

Don't believe the spin from the telecoms companies or government as they have a vested interest. Do listen to the sad chirping of our canaries and heed the advice of the independent voices who have no axe to grind.

@Unity

Errm - I am not Phil! And I certainly do not brown-nose councillors. :-O

And don't you think it is a little hypocritical to try and "out" anonymous posters when you yourself post anonymously?

Anyway, I'm not going telling you who I am - oh, alright then - I'm Andrew Gilligan...
