WALTHAMSTOW: Church murder accused freed

A MAN accused of the murder of a homeless woman in a Walthamstow churchyard has been freed due to lack of evidence.

Jonathan Linzell, 30, of no fixed address, was accused of beating Melita Jo to death in the grounds of St Mary's Church in St Mary Road.

On the eve of his trial at the Old Bailey, the Crown Prosecution Service decided its case against Mr Linzell was not strong enough and he was released from custody.

Mrs Jo's body was discovered by a passer by on September 30.

She had been living in the churchyard for some time and was attacked close to the bench where she often slept.

Police discovered Mrs Jo came to Britain from the Philippines and worked as a nanny in various parts of London.

It is believed she became homeless after moving to Wanstead in 2005 and often slept rough close to Redbridge station.

She became well known in the Walthamstow Village area after making the graveyard her home.

Hundreds of people turned out for a vigil in her honour at St Mary's Church and her body was repatriated back to the Philippines where she received a Roman Catholic funeral.

A police spokeswoman said six people are on bail and are due to return to an east London police station in February.

Police are still appealing for witnesses to the attack.

Anyone with information should call police on 8345 3985 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Another great failure by The Metropolitan Police.

Never to be seen in the streets and can just about investigate there way back to the station when they are out getting their take away food.

Let us campaign to get them out of the Station for 2009

What do you want the Police to do in this case Bert? Fabricate evidence like in the "good old days"? Britain has one of the highest clear-up rates of murder in the world. If the Police had insufficient evidence, you can be very sure it's not from want of trying.

'What do you want the Police to do in this case Bert?'

HOW ABOUT SOLVE IT FOR A START?

Like you, they are baffled.

Why did they charge the man to drop it at court?

Take away the attention from the case?

They have an appaulling clear up rate by the way.

Look at the mess they made of the Wimbledon Common and Dando case. Useless.

If they had had some of those Plastic Police Canteen Support Officers out and about patrolling, it may never have happened.

You hardly see anyone out on the street these days and the Plastic Blunkett Bobbies have now got comfy staying in with the regulars in the warm rather than going out and getting bother.

Any excuse to stay in. They are a reactionary service and not a proactive, preventative and investigative 'Force' anymore. They get away with it because the public want it that way generally. People do not get stopped carrying drugs, guns and knives as you get mini riots and a lot of paperwork when they do.

Look at the filth that hang around late at night around the Bakers Arms without a Policeman insight or in broad daylight selling fags, DVD's and carry on gaming activities. It is sickening what has happened and it can only get worse.

The Police are all hiding inside the station and pop out to report the odd crime or get a kebab.

I think it's unfair to criticise the Police about this before the facts are known. The CPS are least as responsible; supposedly no one can be charged with a crime unless there is over a 50% chance of a conviction. For all we know, a vital witness may have dropped out.

Does seem a shame that the police can't come up with any concrete evidence to convict in this case, surely a few cans of special brew shared out amoungst the bailed six and a tape recorder would turn up trumps.
