Whipps Cross Hospital, in Leytonstone, wants runners to help raise cash for its maternity ward

RUNNERS are being urged to help Whipps Cross Hospital raise £350,000 to improve its maternity ward.

The Leytonstone hospital, which earlier this year launched its Big Push appeal, wants people to take part in sponsored races in September.

The hospital wants runners to attempt The Adidas 5k women's challenge in Hyde Park on September 6.

A hospital spokeswoman said: "The event has proven to be extremely popular whether you want to run or walk.

"With 30,000 women taking part, the day is not only fun but you can play your part and help raise funds for the maternity unit."

The Three2Go 5k run, in Hackney, on September 12, is also an event Whipps wants runners to take part in.

To register for the Hyde Park event visit womenschallenge.co.uk, for the Hackeny race, visit three2go.co.uk.

Let the hospital know that Whipps is your chosen charity and you will be sent a fundraising pack. Visit whipps.nhs.uk/thebigpush or call 8535 6818.

They should recruit the runners from some of the reluctant fathers as they leave the maternity wards, doing a runner to avoid paternal responsibilities.

They could raise this money in quite a short time if all the greedy managers at Whipp's Cross had to pay the same amount of money for the car parking as they claim to the public is the 'market rate' when extorting cash from vulnerable poor people vsisting their sick and dying relatives.

Great, an opportunity to raise more money missed by the decision to exclude male runners. Stupid.

I never got this sponsorship idea: why not just ask us for the money? It seems very odd as well to promote the idea that parenthood is something that women do.

You don't actually think they need the money do you? The NHS is awash with cash these days. Its all about finding something to pretend to struggle about together so the staff and participants can feel all warm and 'communal'. If they wanted to find the money there are any number of management parasites they could get rid of tomorrow or the well-paid senior clinicians could forgo a pay-rise for a year or two.

Correct me if I am wrong but I do remember reading about waltham forest giving £350K to assist black teenagers in gangs. So there must be money for this worth while cause (maternity ward) that is.
