The John Lewis store in the £4bn Stratford City complex, near Leyton on the Olympic site, is now complete

BUILDING work on a department store in the £4bn Stratford City shopping complex has been completed.

Stratford City, to the north of the Olympic site near Leyton, will eventully have 5,000 new homes, a multiplex cinema and 1.6m square ft of shops.

Initial work on the John Lewis department store has now been completed.

Speaking at the site yesterday, Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: "The success of Stratford City is critical to the success of London's 2012 legacy.

"Sitting at the heart of this brand new district in the capital, it will serve and link together the thriving communities that will be created in east London over the coming years."

John Lewis has promised that at least 250 of the 700 jobs in its store will go to long-term unemployed people living near the site.

The first section of the gigantic Stratford City complex, described by developer Westfield as a "new town", is due to open in 2011.

The artist's impression reminds me of the Elephant and Castle with puddles. Let's not hope it doesn't turn out like that, and if it does, we'll be able to trace Boris Johnson and all the architects to their country pads and overseas retirement villas in years to come - bringing them back and forcing them to live out a miserable old age in this brutalist hell.

Hope everyone enjoys the traffic fumes at the Olympics and in Stratford generally

They have "topped-out" the first building. To describe this as completed is a great overstatement. I know an Ilford woman who is looking forward to shopping in Stratford City, so things are on the up - thanks to everyone who worked for so many years to get the Stratford International station.

Pity you can't actually take the Eurostar there after all the money that has been spent.

John Lewis is the reason I end up shopping in Lakeside or central London, both of which require quite a trip. Can't wait til John Lewis comes to Stratford and I can spend my money locally. Not sure why there are so many naysayers; not every story is bad news!

Don't moan, Techno 2.

The station, the key to all this public and private investment, is in the middle of the biggest building site in the UK.

I hear they'll be putting on shuttle buses before the new DLR line is finished in summer 2010. Domestic trains to Kent stations will be running in December 2009; lets hope they can stop at Stratford International from day one.

It is a fact that Europstar does not stop there, even though millions of pounds of public money has been spent on this 'international' station.

The trains go to Stratford and I have been informed that it is a popular location for stowaways to jump off. Looking at the illegal chaps selling DVD's at Leyton Mills, this could be true.

It would be nice to have some traditional stores in Stratford like a Pie Mash and Eel or Haberdashery instead of the Sex shops, Saunas betting shops, Skleps and Internet Mango shops

Stratford .... is a popular location for stowaways to jump off.

Did you make that one up yourself?

No trains stop at Stratford yet. There have been very few stowaways on Eurostar since British Immigration Officers began working at the Paris and Brussels stations. That was well before the London terminus moved to St. Pancras from Waterloo.

No, trains stop at Leyton
to be serviced, you can see them from the road. It is an ideal place for stowaways to alight.
