Pressure is growing on Harry Cohen, MP for Leyton & Wanstead, to resign his seat immediately, rather than remain as MP until a general election

PRESSURE is mounting on Harry Cohen to stand down from his Leyton seat with immediate effect.

Mr Cohen has announced he will not stand at the next general election following his role in the expenses scandal.

But for many of his opponents, this is not enough and they want him to resign his seat now, prompting a by-election.

On Friday dozens of protestors, including trade unionists, will protest outside Mr Cohen's surgery in the Epicentre, in West Street, Leytonstone.

Alex Gounelas, a Socialist Party campaign organiser, said constituents had been outraged by Mr Cohen's “Caligula-like appetite for expenses”.

She said: “If Gordon Brown puts off an election until the last minute in 2010, Mr Cohen has almost an entire year's worth of his inflated MPs salary, pension fund and expenses to cash in safe in the knowledge that he no longer needs a mandate from us.

“We don't want MPs with snouts in the trough,, we want MPs to represent workers in the area that live on the average worker's wage and know what it is like for the people they are supposed to represent to get by.”

Edwin Northover, the Conservative prospective candidate for Leyton, said the scandal had raised serious questions about Mr Cohen's judgement.

He said: “We are therefore calling on him to stand down now and call a by-election.  We want to offer the people of Leyton & Wanstead a clear alternative to this moribund government".

Farooq Qureshi, the Lib Dem candidate, said it would not be fair to put the constituency through a by-election so close to a general election, but said Gordon Brown should call a general election.

But Cllr Qureshi said: “It has been proved that a lot of members currently serving are involved in the misuse of public money, these people are not fit to serve and Harry is near the top of the list.”

Mr Cohen, who claims for his second home which is just six miles from Parliament at Woodcote Road, Wanstead, received a Additional Cost Allowance of £104, 701 between 2002 and 2007, and was the joint highest claimant between 2007 and 2008.

His main family home is listed as a 200-year-old converted school in Colchester, Essex.

He angered many by claiming he was “more professional” than former prime minister Winston Churchill.

Friday's protest will take place from 7pm.

Talk about kicking a man when he's down. Mr Cohen has already announced his registration but still the bloodhounds come. When I have visited Mr Cohen's srugery it's because I actually had a serious problem that needed dealing with. Whatever you think of him, he is still the local MP and people who go to his surgeries are doing so because they have serious problems. It is disgusting that jumped up middle class hypocrites with no problems whatsoever should try and disrupt an MP's surgery. Shamme on anyone who decides to attend this "protest" on Friday night.

He is a champagne socialist who has made a career and lucrative pension on the guise of helping the poor classes when in fact he has merely feathered his nest with the finest feathers like many other MP's across the parties.

For main Home, one should read 'Weekend retreat'

Once he annouced he was standing down he became a "lame duck". He should stand down immediately regardless of his pension payout.

I went to one of Mr Cohen's coffee mornings a few years ago and he made time to see me and all the queues of other people too. He's a hard working MP who will be sorely missed.

On the subject of feathering nests, let's not forget that nice Cllr Loakes, the former Leader of Waltham Forest Council, who recently tried to claim a £22,000 allowance for chairing the local waste authority. Its a shame he's already been plucked from obscurity to stand in Northants. The good people of Leyton and Wanstead must be distraught he won't be able to take over from Mr Cohen.

Oh really. That's how he's helped get suicidal women moved from 3rd floor tower blocks when their nasty landlords refused to; or was able to get a cancer stricken mother the treatment she had previously been denied on the NHS; and on and on. People with no problems should just shut up about Harry Cohen. We will never get another MP who was only interested in working on the ground. I am proud that he voted for the Gurkas in the face of disgraceful government pressure. I am proud he campaigned against Iraq and Gaza. I am proud that I have a working class MP. For those who seem to have forgotten what you learnt at Sunday school: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone".

"For those who seem to have forgotten what you learnt at Sunday school: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"." Most ridiculous thing I've ever read. Winston Churchill was not above reproach, thank God he stood up to be counted.
Might make jury selection a bit tricky as well.
