MEMBERS of a union who clean Waltham Forest's streets have voted against a proposed strike over working conditions and alleged late pay.
The union source, who preferred to remain anonymous, said although members of the GMB union had decided against industrial action, UNITE members will still meet to decide whether to strike.
Street sweepers working for Kier in Waltham Forest have made repeated claims of mounting workloads and issues over shortfalls and late payment of wages.
They say Kier got rid of all its agency staff, causing workloads to triple, and that staff were suffering from shortfalls and late payments in wages.
Kier, which took over as street services from the council's in-house provider in June 2008, has been beset with complaints over quality of work.
It has denied allegations of late payments or shortfalls in wages but has never confirmed whether agency staff were let go.

Here we have a situation where our council awarded a contract to a private company which allows this private company to not have to sweep residential streets - all they do is simply pickup large pieces of litter, but they don't sweep. How can this be allowed?
