A Walthamstow post office is set to be the first in London to re-open after a co-investment was secured

A WALTHAMSTOW post office is set to be the first in London to re-open.

Residents were devastated when the sub-post office in Orford Road was closed last year along with 160 across London, despite fierce protesting by residents to keep it open, even holding a mock-funeral.

But tireless campaigning by the Village Association, which enlisted the help of a local businessman and lobbied local councillors, means the residents will get their post office counter back.

Businessman James Brundle, who co-owns the Eat 17 restaurant and Paul Wines shop in Orford Road made a six-figure offer to the Post Office to re-open a counter as part of a massive re-development of his shop and restaurant.

Mr Brundle, who co-owns the business with two brothers and a businesswoman, said: “Since the post office closed we've had so many customers coming in complaining about it. Most of them are elderly and have been travelling to Wood Street.

“The post office came down and liked our idea but said the financial burden is different now and that we would need co-investment to get it up and running.”

He said he has just received confirmation from Waltham Forest Council that they are prepared to co-invest for a period of four years and is set to sign the agreement this week.

This makes the post office the first in London to re-open, following a successful co-investment by Essex County Council with a shop in Buckhurst Hill.

Sue Carter, of the Walthamstow Village Association, said: “It is a massive result for people in the area. It is about everybody in the community pulling together.

“It is very important people do something for their area, it is no good waiting for the council to do it, you also have to do things yourself.

“But Cllr John Macklin was really helpful and supportive.”

Mr Brundle added: “It is a massive investment for us and we will probably lose money, but the co-investment will help and we will be able to take on the financial burden after four years.

“It is something the residents need and will hopefully bring people back to the village.”

Cllr John Macklin said: “I’m delighted that we have managed to secure funding for the residents’ post office plans.

“I have consistently said that my party is always to prepared to work with local people who approach us with practical ideas for greater community involvement in our local services and I hope this action sends a signal to residents that the Liberal Democrats intend to stick by that promise.”

Good for Cllr Macklin to be so helpful, but will the people in the Village learn to stop voting like lemmings for the Labour Party?

Hope the service in the new post office is not as slow as the service in their restaurant. You need another shave again when you come out of there.

You must have been unlucky, Gravee. On the two occasions I have been at Eat 17, service was excellent - not rushed, but not slow. Maybe the sour look on your face put them off.

It may have been when I looked at the prices, sorry.

"Businessman James Brundle, who co-owns the Eat 17 restaurant and Paul Wines shop in Orford Road made a six-figure offer to the Post Office"....If the prices in his Post Office are going to be the same as in his other two shops then you should just about get change from a fiver when buying a first class stamp.

Whatever happened to the idea the High Street main post office was to re-open back on it's original position on the Arcade corner?
A position where it would serve the elderly for the whole Town at convenient bus stops - unlike the minority in the village area.

Errm, Redfox, that post office opened a few years back (it is in the library complex).

So why won't people in the Village go there?

Because the pseudo 'villagers' need things like the post office to add to their rose tinted view and perspective on life, to convince themselves that are not really living in a hell hole but a Utopian Hamlet.

They need their Post Office as it is several miles to the nearest Town and the pensioners do not have a car. The 'village' has its own overpriced restaurants and foaming coffee houses where the delights of the village primary school are discussed over a latte (£2.95) and croissant(£1.95-jam extra). Little Fifi-Lilly Allen Thornton-Smythe aged 3 is already conversant in fluent Polish, Urdu and Arabic and is learning to play the Sita and Didgereedoo.

The reality of Orford Road is a dirty, drab, crime ridden area with array of run down premises, mixed with overpriced eateries and pubs, in some cases dearer than eating in town. It seems that certain people are building an empire there but then again, in the Land of the Blind, the one-eyed man is King.

Congratulations to all concerned. This is a real victory and shows what campaigns can do if you don't give up. And good for the buisnessman who put his money in too.

Redfox and Techno2: we lost the big post office in the arcade and got a smaller one in the library on the town square. It's an even longer walk from the village, so not a substitute for the one that closed down in Orford Rd, especially for old people.

Yes, great news. Another opportunity for the usual suspects to attack anything positive (or 'rose tinted') happening in the village of course.

Worth remembering the post office has been in that location by the old town hall for 122 years, it also covered for another that closed in Grove Rd a few years ago and it served many elderly resident in nearby sheltered housing as well as non 'rose-tinted' residents.

Yes Orford Rd really is 'blighted' by popular restaurants, shops and shock horror - a bookmaker! Have you ever been in any of the 'run down pubs' lately, all 4 of which have just been extensively refurbished? 122 years ago the area was blighted by even more shops, several factories and a workhouse. Must have been either a real dump or charming depending on whether you're a 'rose tinted' glasses wearer.

Yes, Murderer and sex attacker on the loose, another unsolved murder in the Churchyard last year, Campaigns and meetings by the locals about the robberies in the vicinity, discussed over a bowl of olives and oil with balsamic dip.

Oh what joy it would be the for the Post Office to open so people can pretend to be friendly with each other as they walk along the uneven pavement full of chewing gum, saliva and turd of dog.

If you wear cranberry tinted glasses it is much better.

Your version of reality seems as skewed as the tinted glasses brigade you continually berate for daring to improve things for themselves & others.

This is the reality. Can you deny that there have been 2 murders and rapists on the run? Are you wearing welding goggles now?

Can you deny any of it for that matter?

No denying any of the crime, the village area is very central and not immune. Infact I was mugged in the area a few years ago so have seen it from first hand. The sex attacks took place in the Queen's Road area and sadly much of the central and southern parts of the borough seem especially prone to street crime.

Irrespective of that, the village area is seeing much investment and has a strong community spirit which I hope to see across the borough and beyond. Today it's being visited by judges from the 'London in Bloom' competition. You may consider that elitest and another example of 'them and us'. I see an area with pride and making positive steps.
