Phil Knight, of Ainslie Wood Road, Chingford, is drumming for five days to raise money for the Helen Bamber Foundation

A CHINGFORD musician is aiming for the record books by drumming solidly for FIVE days for charity.

Phil Knight, 25, who lives in Ainslie Wood Road, Chingford, with his parents Julie and Steve, his sister Sam and his fiancé Charlie, is currently drumming in Leicester Square.

The former Highams Park School pupil is attempting to beat the current world record for continuous drumming, which stands at 102 hours and 49 minutes.

Apart from short restroom and food breaks he must drum 24 hours a day without stopping.

He began his arduous task on Sunday and is due to finish on Thursday at 4.40pm.

Mr Knight, a freelance session drummer, is attempting to raise £5,000 for the human rights charity the Helen Bamber Foundation.

He was introduced to the work of Helen Bamber by Emma Thompson, who he met at one of his gigs a few years ago.

The actor has donated £1,000 to the cause.

He has also received messages of support from singers Sir Elton John, Craig David and Daniel and Natasha Bedingfield.

Before beginning his challenge Mr Knight said: “It really moved me when I saw the work Helen Bamber does for women who are survivors of rape, genocide and other gross human rights violations.”

Mr Knight's sister Sam said family members were taking it in turns in Leicester Square cheering him on.

She said: “He hit a bit of a wall on Monday but at no point did he say he was giving up.

“People have been watching him drum and he seems to be getting a good reaction from people.

“We are all supporting him, even though he is a bit of a nutter!”

I feel sorry for his neighbours. I know it is for charity but who wants that racket going on for 24 hours five days a week?

How is he going to go to the loo if he is drumming with both hands?

I am baffled.

I am baffled at the comments of Virgil Poolebarre of Upshire. He has missed the point completely.

Phil Knight is a young man who is doing something really positive for a very good cause and that is the real story.

I have been to see him drumming a couple of times this week in Leicester Square.

It is not a loud "racket" by any means. The tourists and passers-by are enjoying it very much and Phil is raising awareness for a worthwhile charity.

If VP got off his couch and went down to Leicester Square he would see for himself that the "neighbours" are more than happy with this event.

Well done to Phil - if he was still going this afternoon, then he's done it!
BluesBassManuk - you hit the nail on the head with that line "If VP got off his couch..." It looks like VP is the latest identity of an online nuisance for whom my name is "Legion", because he is many (Mr Khalid, Claridger and many others).
He appears to spend all his time at his computer, rather than going out into the real world, usually making disparaging, defeatist, or pointlessly facetious comments. I think he just likes to put people's backs up.
I saw Phil drumming away a couple of times in Leicester Square, and I was pleased to see him, and to read such an upbeat story. Once again, well done.

Good for Phil! After reading about him here, I stopped off in Leicester Square to see him late last night. He had a crowd dancing in front of him. He still looked as cheerful as in this photo.

Has he broken the record yet? It was due at about 4.30 this afternoon.

Virgil/ Claridger/FreshG, or whatever you're calling yourself today - do take a break. You know it's not good for you. Why not get out in the sunshine? Chat to your neighbours?

Phil - best of luck, to you and the Helen Bamber Foundation. Hope you get a good sleep tonight!
