CHINGFORD: Councillor defends park football charge

A TEAM of young footballers fears it may be forced to disband because the council is demanding money for the use of a playing field.

Ainslie Wood FC has been holding summer training sessions on public space behind Salisbury Hall in Chingford with no nets or pitch markings.

The team has regularly used the fields since it was formed in 2007 by Robin Philpott, of Cranston Gardens, Chingford.

Mr Philpott said he was even told by park staff that there is no fee for using the space, but the council insist the charges have been in place for some time.

He said: “We don’t want to waste fuel, and increase the CO2 in the atmosphere, by driving out of the borough to play football. Not all our players would be able to attend training.

“It is odd that this borough is going against the Government’s goals for decreasing pollution and improving youth activity.

“We aren’t bothering anybody. We are simply training, getting fitter and improving our skills.

“It is something I thought the borough would approve of with the London Olympics not far away.”

The team already hires an artificial pitch in the winter and a pitch on Wanstead Flats for its matches. Mr Philpott added: “We don’t have too much money and get by on a shoestring budget.

“With kit fees, equipment fees and league costs, there wouldn’t be a team if we have to pay every time we set foot on a local field.”

Cllr Geraldine Reardon, leisure cabinet member, said "'All teams should pay for using the facilities. We are happy to discuss the hire rates with Ainslie Wood FC, but to date they have not contacted us.”

So this Council really does care about our young people then! Here is a group of youngsters playing for a football club, keeping off the streets, not getting into crime, and our wonderful council says well done, good for you. No, quite the reverse, You have to pay for this. What hippocrates. Cllr Reardon should be ashamed. Instead of encouraging this sort of thing she is totally destroying it. As for the polce being called, I am sure that they would welcome such activities. Waltham Forest Council, come into the real world!!

If the police are called they will probably demonstrate their customary level of interest in crime and criminals.....

According to the Council’s own web site, it “promotes and delivers sports and physical activities to all sections of the community, with the aim of encouraging healthier lifestyles, greater participation and improved quality of life. We believe that sport and exercise are important contributors to your physical and mental well-being”.

But obviously at a cost! Apart from the vital ingredient – grass – what exactly ARE the facilities on this public space Cllr. Reardon?

Is this some kind of last ditch attempt to snatch back whatever few pounds the Borough can make out of any kind of sporting endeavour after their gutless and witless demonstration of how to let the whole Olympic dream slip through their incompetent fingers? Their management of that process has left the ratepayers of one of the so-called five Olympic Boroughs, with nothing more than a wind turbine as a legacy and just about sums up LBWFs true commitment to Sport

I am not clear what the police would be arresting these lads for (even if they wanted to) if they are simply kicking a ball about in a public space at a time it is open to the general public. Could someone from the council please clarify that?

I think it's great that this team has been formed and I think it's scandalous that the Council, instead of seeing this as a facility and encouraging people to form sports teams just sees this as yet another way to make money. Charging to use a playing field that's open to the public? Better still to have teenagers hanging around on street corners, getting into trouble because they're bored, vandalising things causing damage and ultimately costing thousands of pounds - yes why not?! Get real Waltham Forest!

facility? the grass belongs to mother nature and we shouldn't have to a penny to enjoy free green grass! This means the sky, the ground, the tree's are facility's so we must make the birds pay!

Think how ridiculous this all is what happen to children been able to kick a ball on grass?
