WALTHAM FOREST: Fears raised over benefits of Olympic Games

WALTHAM Forest could lose out on the advantages of staging the 2012 Olympic Games, along with the four other ‘host’ boroughs.

Fears have emerged that ambitious plans to change the face of some of the capital’s most deprived areas could be held back without huge effort and cooperation from the Government and Boris Johnson.

Dee Doocey, chairman of the London Assembly’s economic development committee, said east Londoners risked being “left out” without securing cash to firm up the Games’ legacy in terms of “skills, jobs, housing and standard of living”.

Areas where the host boroughs are falling behind the rest of London include unemployment, education and skills.

The targets have been called hugely ambitious and concerns were raised over whether they could be met without the necessary funding being secured.

The economic development committee is now looking into the role of the Olympic Park Legacy Company, responsible for the future of venues and parkland.

It is also in charge of overseeing the future of the benefits to the five ‘host’ boroughs (Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest and Greenwich).

Excuse me - WHAT "BENEFITS" from the Olympic games?
There are none at all.
The whole thing is a waste of our money, designed to put kudos and rewards in the pockets of greedy developers, and the fascits who are in charge of the Olympic movement.
If you think that last statement is a bit extreme, I suggest you look up the boss of the "Olympic movement", Samaranch - he is a real, actual, ex-Franco fascist.
An even nicer person to know than the vile Coe, in fact.

P.S. Why were the people of London never asked if they wanted the "olympics"?
Because we didn't, and still don't!

Quite agree. There never was going to be any benefit.

How far the mainstream is finally catching on can be seen by the comments of Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, in the Evening Standard last November. Sir Robin, himself a member of the London 2012 organising committee was attacking the lack of progress on government promises to deliver a legacy for the 2012 Games and said that even his borough, with two thirds of Olympic build, was not seeing an improvement in jobs, housing or healthcare.

Compared with Newham, even far fewer jobs or other benefits than there (other than the pointless ones in the council designed to cheer-lead this nonsense along) have been created or gone to people from Waltham Forest, illegal casuals or otherwise. But make no mistake about it - we will be left will the bills for decades to come.

Oh, there'll be benefits aplenty, believe me, but they'll be hoovered up by carpetbaggers from outside the 5 Host Boroughs. Even within the 5 Boroughs there's a pecking order and I think we all know where Waltham Forest comes. After all, those of us living in the centre and north of the borough won't even be able to get to the Olympic site by train - in 'Games time' or, if Boris Johnson's Transport Strategy is anything to go by, in Legacy either!

I visited Stratford the other day having not been there for some years. I was surprised to see no real change in the shopping centre - it made Walthamstow seem good. People complain Waltham Forest is not seeing any benefits but it seems to me the residents of Stratford have not gained anything yet. There are vast new buildings going up so plenty of jobs but how many are for the residents of Newham? Will the wealth ever start to trickle down?

Unlikely, Silent Majority. As to the shopping centre (dreary isn't it) I'm sure it will be massively redeveloped as soon as Stratford City Westfield opens, Walthamstow on the other hand...!

I notice that the caption for the photo. says:
"Opympic Park" ...
Shouldn't that be Park for Olympic Pimps?
Especially given all the explotation going on around here .....
I suppose it is a "benefit" to someone, though!

I don't know what all you doubting Thomases are on about - the olympics are going to be great for all of us: more traffic, more rubbish, more prostitutes, more people waiting to be housed, more pollution - Waltham Forest is about to enter a real golden era.

Oh, wait a minute...
