A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build 144 homes close to protected green areas and waterways is set to be opposed by members of the Lea Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA).

Green campaigners, residents and neighbouring Hackney Council have all already raised objections to a large development at Essex Wharf, off Lea Bridge Road, Leyton.

It is feared the nine-storey development will set a precedent for building in the area, close to protected marshland and the River Lea.

Although Waltham Forest Council will consider the plans, Hackney councillors are concerned because of the size and potential impact of the development so close to its borough border.

On Wednesday night LVRPA is also expected to object.

Members will be asked to agree that the development will 'have an adverse impact on the open character of the regional park by reason of its overdevelopment, height and scale'.

A 2008 application to build 167 flats on the site was rejected and dismissed on appeal.
