WALTHAMSTOW: Town square goes sports mad for charity

PEOPLE of all ages came together to enjoy a jamboree of fun and frolics for Sport Relief yesterday (March 20).

Hundreds of people descended on Walthamstow town square to take in some top sporting action on the big screen and have fun with the range of activities on offer.

Even the gloomy weather didn't dampen people's spirits as they were entertained by Balloonatics, who walked among people in the square while twisting and bending balloons into all manner of shapes.

Later on singer Vanessa Cross performed several numbers for the assembled crowd and there was a spectacular fire-breathing performance – the perfect antidote for the chilly March weather.

There were also games of basketball and five-a-side football happening for the more active visitor, while throughout the afternoon the big screen showed action from the crucial Six Nations rugby games as the tournament reached its conclusion, as well as action from the Winter Paralympics in Vancouver.

Marie Jackson, 15, from Chobham Road, Leyton said: “I've had a great time today, I've done lots of fun stuff.

“I really enjoyed the people doing all the things with the balloons, and I'm a bit of a sports nut so watching the rugby and some of the Paralympics has been great too.

“I've never got involved with raising money for charity but I'm definitely going to do something for Sport Relief next time round as it looks like so much fun.”

Peter Webb, 45, of Hoe Street, Walthamstow, said: “I'm running the mile over in Lee Valley on Sunday so I though I'd come down to get in the spirit of things beforehand.

“It's great to see so many out and about enjoying themselves and raising money for charity.

“It's good to remember people less fortunate than you.”

We have a perfectly adequate athletics track in Chingford Road, completely fitted out for proper sports activities. WHY wasn't it used and WHY doesn't the Borough's expensive 2012 Team promote it?

Probably, Redfox, because they're trying to engage with people who don't frequent Chingford Road - or any other of the borough's sporting facilities. I think it's known as 'taking it to the people'. Good on 'em!

And nobody was stabbed or robbed while all this was going on. That deserves a gold medal itself!!!!!
