LEYTONSTONE: Plan to turn Lincolns into "community pub"

LEYTONSTONE councillors are to meet the owners of a troubled night spot to discuss how it can be turned into a "local community pub."

Lincolns, in Leytonstone High Road, was closed last year following repeated complaints about noise and anti-social behaviour.

The pub, which had become plagued by violent criminals and drug dealers, kept its license but has to abide by strict conditions, including installing CCTV cameras, banning drinking outside on the forecourt and meeting residents, council and police every three months.

Owner Trust Inns Ltd has promised to rebrand the venue as a traditional English pub and the three Leytonstone ward councillors, Clyde Loakes, Jenny Gray and Marie Pye, are to meet with the company to discuss ideas for the pub's future.

Cllr Loakes said: "We believe we can bring to the table a number of different interests to help thrash out a way forward for this troubled pub, that ensures its future as a mainstay of the local Leytonstone community.

" We want the pub to be a ‘local’ again and we believe it could play a crucial role in the development of Leytonstones fantastic arts and culture scene, which came to the fore through use of the former Woolworths shop.”

“However we need to see how responsive Trust Inns are to working with us, local resident and community groups and other organisations, before starting to develop our plans further."

Trust Inns has agreed to stop selling African beer in order to appeal to a wider section of the community - a decision branded racist by former manager Marshall Maphosa.

The Ferndale Area Residents Association complained for a number of years about excessive noise and disruption caused by users of the pub.

An undercover police officer was offered drugs in the pub and former manager, Jerry Nyoni, admitted he was scared of confronting violent criminals who drank there.

A 35-year-old man was stabbed several times in the back, neck and chest and his heart was damaged after he was attacked when leaving Lincolns in 2005.

Presumably it was also councillors who gave the necessary consents (planning, licensing) for it to become a "night spot"??? This has all the hallmarks of being an election gimmick by the Leytonstone councillors.

Morris, give them a chance. As I understand it, it's the local residents who are behind this move so naturally the Councillors will get involved.

Leytonstone has a good, solid community and this could definitely work. 'Old' Lincoln's was run for a niche to the detriment of the wider community and a pub's reputation is only as good as that of its clientele. Leytonstone absolutely needs another 'community pub' and it's good to see things moving at last.

I agree with the essence of what you say. Having served as a local councillor myself for 24 years I know just how certain people involve themselves at just the right time!

I think that everywhere you look there are pubs badly in need of rehabilitation in the interests of their local communities.

Lincoln's is such a well-known Leytonstone Landmark that it really must be at the heart of regenerating the High Road. Any of the "right" sort of people looking to move to E11 will certainly be looking at places to eat and drink. There's plenty of good places to eat, but not so many places to enjoy a pint.

Couldn't hurt to sort out the Loaded Dog, either. That place was doing well but was torpedoed by the pubco's financial problems. Having it boarded up does that locale no favours.

Ah, once upon a time, when this was Big Hand Moes, I had a wonderful but ultimately disappointing night, at the (under)age of 16, when my elder cousin and his friends introduced me to the delights of Beer, when England played Germany in Euro 96.

Along with New Years Eve, early evening pool sessions, and a few other England matches, this place gave me a few fond memories.

If it was like that these days then I'd probably consider going back one day :)
