Residents group tackles dog mess in Leytonstone

A GROUP of residents took to the streets to impress upon dog owners about the nuisance of dog fouling.

Ferndale Area Residents Association (FARA) in Leytonstone, decided to kick up a stink by holding a “Doggy Doos and Doggy Don'ts” event on Friday evening to raise awareness about the dangers of dog fouling after receiving complaints from members.

A team of volunteers, accompanied by PCSO Charlotte Riley, spoke to dog walkers around Ferndale Road and Wanstead Flats and handed out information leaflets, dog goody bags and most importantly - poo bags.

FARA chair and owner of a greyhound called Cray, Flash Bristow, said: "We are letting dog owners know that it’s not acceptable to foul the pavements.

"This is the issue most frequently raised by our members, and we need to make it clear that dog owners must pick up their dogs’ doings."

FARA committee member, Vicky Allen, added: “I love dogs but their mess can be both a real eyesore and a health hazard, especially to young children.

"FARA aims to do whatever it can to improve our area for residents. I hope this event has raised awareness of the problem, and jogged the conscience of offending dog owners."

Surely we do not need a Plastic Policeman on 25k a year to patrol the streets looking for doggy doo doo, doo we?

What has happened to the dog wardens on thousands of pounds a year also.

Maybe Cameron can look here to start saving tax payers cash!!??

How short some people's memories are. Several, if not all of this group are old enough to remember only 4 years ago, the Labour council introduced Pooper-Scooper motorbikes, each rider and bike was equipped with a vacumn-operated tube and backpack. That quickly dealt with the problem.

Why did they disappear? Were there staff/union disagreements? Were they TOO efficient?
Where too are the Green-Energy battery powered vehicles the council once had - tucked away behind Silver Birch House in Blackhorse Lane.
Where also are the 20 - odd bicycles that were purchased for the council's Street Warden teams in 2006. Did anyone ever witness a Street Warden actually riding one?

Any members of staff wish to speak out?

My suspicion is they have all been sold as they didn't earn revenue, and the funds raised have gone to buying camera cars.
Or am I being cynical?

Did you know that under the Shari'ah (Islamic law) there are two footpaths? One for human beings and another for animals. I'm sure that would solve the problem of dog fouling being a nuisance.

Peace be upon those who follow the guidance,

A tootle round the internet reveals that, under Shari'ah law, no-one should keep a dog as a pet. More radically, apparently black dogs should be killed. And even more radically, in several parts of the world there have been mass massacres of dogs in the name of Shari'ah law.

In the light of that, I don't think supportersofsunnah's comment has much to commend it.

Yes, Helen, I thought dogs were haram (forbidden) in Islam. They have a point, not about killing them (although Lord Toby Harris might disagree!) but qenuine dog-lovers really shouldn't keep dogs in cities.

Hi, Flash here (you can see my beautiful dog in the photo above).

I am a dog lover, but I disagree that dogs shouldn't be kept in cities - I think it depends on the circumstances. We are very lucky in Waltham Forest to have so much green space - there is Wanstead Flats at the end of my road so it is less than 5 minutes from my front door to a space where my dog can have fun exploring. His needs are met and he is a very happy dog.

Genuine dog owners are the ones who will choose an appropriate breed for their circumstances and will make sure the dog is well cared for. Perhaps you should direct your comments at the owners of "status dogs" who don't care for the dog and only own it for one purpose, or even worse keep a dog for fighting.

Redfox, I do remember the dog pooper scooper chaps on mopeds, yes. These days dog mess is cleaned by street sweepers. My street is cleaned daily as there is a school at the end, however neighbouring streets in our area are cleaned weekly and the dog poo soon accumulates. This is why we felt the need to try to persuade dog owners to pick up after their dogs. After all, it is an offence. Saying there should be more cleaners is one thing, but surely it is better not to break the law on dog fouling in the first place?

Actually Helen, you are incorrect. It is authentically narrated that the Final Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "You cannot keep except three types of dogs: the guide dog, the guard dog and the hunting dog."

I think separate footpaths are a good answer to this problem affecting the local community.

SupportersofSunnah, note the words I used were "dog as a PET" - I was not referring to working dogs. Having said that, I am fascinated that the the Prophet, living in the 7th century, knew about guide dogs.

I take Flash's points about our locale and also about 'status dogs', which is what really riles me. Such a pity that, as ever, an irresponsible minority spoils it for the responsible majority. Tougher legislation is required, though. We surely can't call ourselves a civilised society whilst turning a blind eye to animal neglect and cruelty on the scale we are now experiencing in London.

Why can't we bring back dog licences and have compulsory obedience training and microchipping of all dogs. Also compulsory neutering of all dogs except where owner is a licensed breeder. Any dog caught without microchip/licence: off to the dog shelter for rehoming (if possible) or to be put down (if not). It should be a lot more difficult to own and keep a dog, to weed out the irresponsible owners. I'd be happy to pay some extra council tax to get these so-called status dogs off the street.

Tenants of social housing should be banned from keeping dogs in properties without gardens.
A restriction should be placed on the type of dog allowed in properties with a garden.
After all, these tenants are supposed to be financially unable to provide themselves with housing so they should also be unable to afford to keep an expensive dog!

I have yet to see an owner of the 'staffie\pitbull type of dog picking up their dogs mess.
Not seen as 'cool' or whatever the modern terminology is.
