LEYTON: Foxes create nappy mess

A WIDOW says foxes are raiding rubbish bags and littering her garden with soiled nappies.

Wildlife experts believe the fox which attacked baby twins Lola and Isabella Koupparis as they slept in their cots last week may have mistaken the smell of the dirty nappies for food.

Jean Farmer, of Colchester Road, Leyton, thinks they could be right as her beloved garden is often strewn with used nappies brought in by neighbourhood foxes.

The 73-year-old has spotted the foxes carrying the nappies and wants parents to be more responsible when disposing of the smelly waste.

She said: "I get so frustrated because this has been going on for six months now."

“The problem could be easily prevented if residents put the waste in their bins and not rubbish bags which the animals can tear apart.

"There are usually quite a few nappies when it happens. It maybe happens three nights a week." Mrs Farmer, who is proud of her 90ft-long garden, said she and her lodger share the responsibility of clearing up the unpleasant mess.

She said: "I'm a former nurse but as I've got older my stomach has become more sensitive."

Lola Koupparis is said to be making a good recovery from the fox attack, which left the nine-month old with facial and arm injuries.

Her sister, Isabella, underwent surgery at Great ormond Street for arm injuries.

They were attacked as they slept in their cots. Mrs Farmer described the incident as "terribly sad".

The sooner they start culling these rodents along with grey squirrels and old pigeons the better. People who feed these pests need to be prosecuted. The damage they cause is immense.

For a start foxes aren't rodents.
Secondly what immense damage? A few torn bins.

The nappies were obviously strewn all over the place because of some dross that obviously lives in the local area that can't be bothered to put their rubbish away properly. Perhaps we could have a cull of them first.....

T'was a time when much of Redbridge was rolling countryside but seems little remain of the rural memories of my boyhood. Foxes are sly, nocturnal, vicious and notoriously smelly - something they try to mask by rolling on things like old nappies or rotting carcasses. Gamekeepers wishing to destroy a troublesome fox might shoot a cat, keep its body until it reaches the required state of putrefaction and then stake it out for Mr Fox on the next clear moonlit night within range of his gun. Anything smelly and objectionable is attractive to Renard! Even well groomed tame foxes stink on cold days.

I can't believe a fox opening bin bags is considered 'news'.

Yes I did see the news. The twin girls were attacked "allegedly" by a fox.

Funny how the family had a pet dog, that seems to have been mysteriously forgotten about by the media. This is not to lessen the attack as I feel sorry for the poor girls.
