LEYTON: Station capacity to double

THE capacity of Leyton Tube station will be doubled under plans to deal with the influx of visitors to the Olympics.

There were concerns that the High Road station would not be able to cope with the surge in numbers expected next year.

But an agreement has now been reached to enhance exits and entrances on both sides of the station.

In addition to the current exit, new access to the street will be created from the westbound platform on to Goodall Road.

Two extra exits will be created from the eastbound platform when needed.

The changes come after talks between Waltham Forest Council, Transport for London (TfL), the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

The ODA provided the £200,000 funding for the work, which is set to take place in February next year.

Council leader Chris Robbins said, “There will obviously be a large rise in visitors to both London and the borough during the Games. It is important that all transport services work to full capacity during the Olympics and Paralympics, but also that Leyton benefits from the legacy of the Games.”

Michael Polledri, chairman of the Waltham Forest Business Board, said: “These improvements will be of great benefit to both the residents of Leyton and the businesses in the area.”

Peter Hendy. TfL Commissioner, said, “The new improvements at Leyton Tube station will double its capacity and leave a transport legacy Londoners will benefit from for years to come. Given the station’s proximity to the Olympic Park the additional capacity will also compliment the transport hubs in the area during Games time.”

CCTV and new public address systems will also be installed.

i suggested weeks ago that there is a disaster waiting to happen here. pavement is too narrow. they must open the Platform exit to avoid terrible crushes.

I did wonder if this was going to happen. It was quite clear that it wouldn't be able to cope with the extra numbers, and appeared to be quite easy to implement. I'm surprised it's only now being announced, and wasn't part of the original Olympic transport plans.

I don't see any assurances here that the station will, or won't be able to cope with BOTH passengers joining AND de-training from either platform.
There was originally the advice that the station would only be open (during certain hours?) for passengers de-training because of the numbers, leaving us poor plebs not supporting the blooming games, to go elsewhere! Not least amongst those of course, the many cycle commuters using the Leyton Bike Shed.

pws What about the smelly and disgusting Langthorne Road covered walkway? Councillor Finger-in-the-Pye sorted that one yet ?

I really hope they implement changes soon, I've used the station for 5 years now and leaving from the east bound platform is always an effort, and what makes it all the more annoying is the locked gate and old ticket booth , I really wish they'd open that up allow people to leave the station and by-pass the main entrance... In an ideal world widening the whole bridge to give more of a pedestrian walkway would be great too.

This is welcome news, but rather baffling: Councillors and residents of the local area have been voicing concerns for several years, and been told in clear terms by both TfL and the Mayor that no alterations were going to take place, but simply that trains would not stop to unload when the platforms were crowded.
Why the change of tune? Can it be that someone, somewhere has actually listened?
