WALTHAMSTOW: Concern over Olympic campsite plan

WALTHAMSTOW: Concern over Olympic campsite plan WALTHAMSTOW: Concern over Olympic campsite plan

RESIDENTS have expressed concern over plans to turn a sports field into a 5,000 capacity campsite during the Olympics.

The council has suddenly announced it is renting out Low Hall Sports Ground in Walthamstow for around three weeks during July and August to help fund its 'Big 6' events to celebrate the Games.

Big Events Camping Ltd, which will run the site, claims it will be the “largest campsite London has seen” and will feature food stalls, a 140 metre bar, and a stage with live entertainment.

But neighbours fear massive disruption and have accused the firm of factual inaccuracies on its advertising.

The official website for the campsite claims it is a five minute shuttle bus journey from the Olympic Park in Stratford, and also originally claimed that Walthamstow was "resplendent with large multi-cultural markets [and] movie cinemas” - although this was later removed following complaints.

Diane Hackney, 52, of nearby Clacton Road, said: “We're very concerned about the noise and the parking. We don't have a controlled parking zone here and there's no parking at the campsite, so it will be a nightmare.

“The organisers are encouraging people to come by bus but I can't see many people squeezing onto the W19 with all their camping gear.

“We don't want visitors to the Olympics to come away with a negative experience of Waltham Forest – but the promotion doesn't say that the site is next to a busy train line, a bread factory and the water treatment works. And it's not five minutes from the Olympic Park.”

Mark Knox, 40, of Marconi Road in Leyton, said: “There hasn't been any consultation with the public on this and it's clear that an extra 5,000 people coming here will have a huge impact on the Lea Bridge Road area.”

Denis Geary, managing director of Big Events Camping Ltd, said he thought only a small minority of “uninformed” residents were opposed.

He insisted that the shuttle bus would take only five minutes but revealed it would drop campers in Ruckholt Road, Leyton, requiring them to walk the final stretch to the Olympic Park.

He said: “All the music will stop at 9pm to minimise disturbance and I want to meet with residents to discuss the plans.

“I think Walthamstow is a nice place and it'll be a great place for people who want to come here and enjoy the Olympics.”

He said the campsite did not need planning permission but did need a licence, which had “nearly” been finalised.

Sporting facilities such as cricket and football pitches on the land will be unavailable between late July and September, although the council has pledged to help relocate affected clubs.

The council expects to make around £2million in extra revenue from the Games, with potentially £1.5million of that being spent on the 'Big 6'.

The planned campsite will have capacity for around 5,000 campers plus up to 5,000 visitors per day.

The reason that Mr Geary believes there are a number of "uninformed residents" is due to the fact that NO residents appear to have been informed about this until this week!

It is hardly surprising that we are concerned about it, especially as BCE Ltd's dire use of social networking has been to ignore and then DELETE all questions directed to them by rather surprised and concerned locals and accuse them of being malicious.

I was banned off of the camp in London facebook page for agreeing with Diane Hackney and others and all I said was the market was not resplendent (sorry) but it's not! It used to be now it is struggling. I want an apology from Camp in London for their behaviour. Doubt I will get it though. They are not to be trusted at all.

How on earth are people going to walk to Olympic stadia from Ruckholt Road? Everyone has to go via Westfield Shopping Centre for security purposes. Think he'd better add that to the website information! Site and facilities/services clearly not suitable therefore for disabled people!

ah... an alternative 'camp in london' website is being set up by local people www.campinlondon.inf
o. All will be revealed on that in time - lots of unusual 'coincidences' being found. There will also be an online petition on that website plus a forum. If you're on Twitter you can follow what other local people are saying. Its @CampInLDN

'He insisted that the shuttle bus would take only five minutes..'
This is just feasible, if the bus waits at the far recess of Argall Avenue, and passengers walk through the road block beside the Recycling Centre.
Or will the block be removed just for their sake?
It seems that yet again the Council is ignoring the rules laid down by law for the publicising of planning applications, which still stipulate that they must appear in 'a newspaper circulating locally'. In the days of the web, and with a Council publication appearing on every doormat, this may seem a dated requirement; but since the Council don't make the obvious use of their own publication to keep people informed, it's not hard to conclude that they're happier keeping people in the dark.
It's fair to ask why the much closer open space at Ive Farm recreation centre is not being put to this use, since apparently it's in a neglected condition and little used, unlike Low Hall.

5 minutes, if you add in all the extra Olympic traffic and road diversions? I don't think so....

This so called olympic borough has nothing for anyone. Chris robbins has killed off everything for political gain and for his housing pals !!

The stow would have been the biggest attraction for visitors but Cllr Robbins took the money rather than listen to residents

I emailed the company pointing out that their Home page gives the shuttle bus journey time to the Olympic Park as 10 mins whereas the Location page states 5 mins and that, whatever the reality of the estimated travel time, the information needs to be consistent or they could find themselves being accused of false selling. I received a friendly reply from someone called Kylie assuring me that this would be addressed. Let's see if it is.

PS: Kylie was as good as her word - it now states 5-10 mins on both pages. Consistent and more realistic, though arguably still optimistic.

She's on the case. Has replied to residents who have bothered to contact her about it and I spoke to her at her pop up surgery yesterday - she actioned my request today. PDQ, don't you think. Helps if you contact her/make the effort to go and see her at shopping centre. Not too hard to see her/talk to her - there was a queue of people to see her yesterday. See, it's easy to do ;)

Actually, when did you come to Walthamstow Mr Geary? And what, in particular, made you think it is 'nice'? Certainly not 'nice' with all the factories/dump etc by the camp site

They are right. From Ruckholt Road, you can go via the new Ruckholt Road bridge (red colour) by the coach park. Or go by the junction of Eastway/Ruckholt Rd where Waterden Rd used to be, then enter via the press centre entrance.
The only way they could make that in 5 minutes is early mornign or after 9pm - non Olympic times.

Denis Geary might think that "only a small minority of “uninformed” residents were opposed" to this scheme, but there has been no consultation with local people whatsoever. If there had been, I am certain that many local residents including myself would have expressed a wide variety of concerns.

It is difficult to see how 5000 people turning up to camp at the end of the road, plus 5000 visitors a day, (with a 140 metre bar on site!) will not cause massive disruption and inconvenience for those living nearby.

And as for the claim that the campsite is only five minutes from the Olympic site, Waltham Forest Council's own website describes Low Hall Sports Ground as being 14 minutes by car from the Olympic Park.

Let's face it, this is just about making money for Big Events Camping and the council, with no concern whatsoever for local people.

Just another example of Cllrs Robbins and Loakes doing their best to keep residents in the dark. The less we know the better is their motto. The consultation for Wood Street was held over Christmas when the information was displayed in a closed building! When will they learn that at some point they will need residents on their side and by ignoring us all the time we will not be interested in listening even if they try! This could have a major impact on how residents will be "managed" during the Olympics.

I live right near the site, which is a regular jogging destination for me. I'm quite excited to be near such a controversial event. The local shops should benefit.
But I do find the advertising for the site unbelievable. The photos on the website clearly illustrate camping on rolling hills in the countryside. It is actually a pretty bog standard playing factory flanked by railway lines, an industrial estate and waterworks. We enjoy it as a green space, but come on.........How can you describe a playing field as "lush"?
