OLYMPICS: Europe's largest bell to ring in 2012 Games

THE largest ringing bell in Europe will mark the start of the 2012 Olympic Games, it has been announced.

The 27-tonne bell will hang at one end of the Olympic Stadium in Stratford and will be inscribed with a quote from Shakespeare play The Tempest, which reads “Be not afeared. The isle is full of noises”.

It will chime during the opening ceremony to mark the start of the 2012 Games.

Film director Danny Boyle, who is in charge of the ceremony, said the estimated £27m event would be titled “The Isle of Wonders” and said he took inspiration from the Sydney Olympics in 2000, which have since become known as The People’s Games.

Mr Boyle must organise around 20,000 volunteers who are taking part in the opening performance.

Not impressed.
So they got a big bell.
Woohoooo !!
This event will /has cost us all dearly !
Short term jobs , another estate, just what the East End needed , another area to run into disrepair once the games are history!
Id dearly love to be wrong, but see no benefit for the local population in any guise... before, during or after the Games.

27 tonnes! That explains where all the non-ferrous metal has been disappearing to!

As local boy, Leslie Phillips, was wont to say, "ding dong!"
